1. Alzheimer’s Disease
Naringenin is being researched as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease. Naringenin has been demonstrated to improve memory and reduce amyloid and tau proteins in a study using a mouse model of Alzheimer’s Disease.
2. Antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral
There is evidence of antibacterial effects on H. pylori. Naringenin has also been shown to reduce hepatitis C virus production by infected hepatocytes (liver cells) in cell culture. This seems to be secondary to naringenin’s ability to inhibit the secretion of very-low-density lipoprotein by the cells. The antiviral effects of naringenin are currently under clinical investigation. Reports of antiviral effects on polioviruses HSV-1 and HSV-2 have also been made, though replication of the viruses has not been inhibited.
Naringenin has been shown to have significant antioxidant properties.
Naringenin has also been shown to reduce oxidative damage to DNA in vitro and in animal studies.
4. Anti-injury effect
Injury refers to the destruction of the tissue caused by various trauma factors (such as severe infection, trauma, shock, toxic heavy metals, etc.) and its local and systemic reactions. Naringenin has a protective effect on lead-induced damage and provides a research direction for the treatment of damage caused by toxic heavy metals. An acute lung injury (ALI) model was established by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induction. Different doses of naringenin were injected intraperitoneally. The correlation of factors in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed that naringenin significantly inhibited TNF-α and TGF-β1. Up-regulation of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels decreased the levels of malondialdehyde and hydroxyproline in the lungs, increased the activity of SOD, GSH-Px, and HO-1, indicating that naringenin can effectively protect and treat ALI. It provides a new idea for clinical treatment of lung injury.
5. Lowering blood fat
Hyperlipidemia is mainly caused by high levels of cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein (LDLC) in plasma. It is a common disease that threatens human health and its incidence is increasing year by year. . Although statins and fibrates are effective, they have many side effects. Therefore, people have shown great interest in the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine in reducing blood fat. Studies have found that flavonoids such as naringenin can reduce the concentration of CH and TG in the blood by inhibiting apolipoprotein B secreted by the liver, thereby achieving the effect of lowering blood fat.
